Overall goals
Atlanterhavsparken its purpose is to be a world-leading source of insight into marine life, with a focus on the Norwegian coast in particular, with and without the effects of human activity. We will be a sustainability agent for the ocean - the voice of the sea. In this way, we will ensure that visitors and partners develop good attitudes and make sure to act in a way in their own lives - at home and in the workplace - that means that Atlanterhavsparken as a whole contributes to a positive development for the environment in general and for the ocean in particular.
The method for achieving our purpose is to convey knowledge through entertainment and vice versa. This ensures maximum attention and willingness to change for the good of nature.
Our values - genuine, committed, knowledgeable and proud - guide everything we do. The strategic value of authentic is also central to our environmental policy. We strive to present animals and plants in the most authentic surroundings and living conditions possible, and this also means that the impact on animals and plants and the environment is as minimal as possible, e.g. by
- animals and plants have plenty of space so they can develop with enough room around them, as they would have in the wild
- plenty of fresh water pumped in and out of the plant - equivalent to about 21,000 liters per minute.
- minimal use of fresh water that could be used as drinking water or for agriculture - cf. that most saltwater aquariums use fresh water to which salt has been added
In this way, our animals and plants live up to the conditions of the sea just outside, and energy consumption, emissions and other environmental impact are minimized.
Operational goals
- We work continuously to seek energy savings wherever possible. Since the start in 1998, energy use per visitor has been significantly reduced, which can be attributed to a combination of more visitors and energy savings
- We work continuously to eliminate the use of plastic and disposable items in our café, event and store operations and replace these with environmentally friendly items, leaving us with minimal of these, but compensating with price and availability as incentives to reduce use and clear guidance on how to handle the waste when it is chosen.
- We work continuously with the selection in the store, with an absolute goal of 100% recyclable products in the store, and with a durability in design (timelessness) and quality that ensures longevity and use.
- We feed fish and animals at Atlanterhavsparken largely with fish from the fishing industry in the area that would otherwise be destroyed.
- We have a strong focus on waste sorting and have introduced sorting bins both for those of us who work at the foundation and for visitors
- We are continuously switching to LED light sources and have minimal of these left.
- We will focus on developing even better impact on digital platforms, so that we reach as many people as possible, including those who come to Tueneset
- We inform all our partners and suppliers that we are striving for eco-lighthouse status, and we want them to do the same.
